Jordan Review:
Qualification history
Jordan’s bid to qualify for the finals began ahead of the 1986 FIFA World Cup™, when they came up against Iraq and Qatar. Subsequent qualification campaigns have been characterised by solid performances typically undone by a lack of top-flight experience. The closest the national side has come to reaching the finals was in 2006, when they let slip the chance to make history, losing to Iran and finishing runners-up in their first-round qualifying group.
Uruguay Review:
Qualification history
Uruguay’s sterling efforts at South Africa 2010 made it even harder to fathom why they had qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ only once in the previous 20 years. Present at Italy 1990, La Celeste missed out on USA 1994 and France 1998, rejoined the global elite at Korea/Japan 2002 and were then denied a berth in Germany four years later by play-off opponents Australia. Finishing fifth again in the CONMEBOL qualifying group for South Africa 2010, they went down the play-off route once more, this time getting the better of Costa Rica to book their place.
FIFA World Cup finals history
Prior to the 1970s, when they began a lengthy period in the doldrums, Uruguay were widely regarded as one of the giants of world football. That status was founded on their two FIFA World Cup wins, the first of which came at home in 1930, and the second in Brazil 20 years later. That second triumph was secured by a shock 2-1 defeat of the hosts, a game since dubbed the Maracanazo after the name of the stadium where the Uruguayans stunned an entire nation. Their run to the semi-finals at Mexico 1970 was their last contribution of any real note at the finals until Diego Forlan and his cohorts advanced to the last four in South Africa last year, on what was Uruguay’s 11th appearance in the biggest tournament of them all.

Mexico Details:
Qualification history
Just as at the start of every four-year cycle, Mexico are clear favourites to secure one of the available North, Central America and Caribbean Zone berths for the next FIFA World Cup™. Having already appeared at 14 editions of the final tournament, El Tri have successfully negotiated the last five consecutive istalments of CONCACAF qualifying – a sequence that has fans of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup champions already taking their presence at Brazil 2014 for granted.
New Zealand Details:
Qualification history
New Zealand endured a 28-year absence from the FIFA World Cup™ before reaching South Africa 2010 with a drama-charged intercontinental victory over Bahrain. The 1-0 aggregate scoreline may have been on a knife-edge throughout but even that could not compare with the All Whites’ adventures in reaching Spain 1982. The Kiwis played a then-record 15 matches to qualify, including a remarkable 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Riyadh when anything less would have resulted in elimination. There followed a character-filled 2-1 play-off win over China PR in neutral Singapore, to deny the world’s most populous nation their first appearance on the world stage.
FIFA World Cup finals history
New Zealand were dealt the toughest draw imaginable for their FIFA World Cup debut. The Kiwis were forced to open against a Scotland side featuring some of their all-time greats, before meeting USSR and rounding out their campaign against a vintage Brazil, and the likes of Zico and Eder. It was little surprise that the amateur New Zealanders were unable to secure a point but they took solace from two goals in a 5-2 defeat against Scotland. Incredibly the All Whites completed South Africa 2010 as the only unbeaten team, although draws against world champions Italy, Paraguay and Slovakia, meant elimination at the group stage.
The current crop
The All Whites have had limited opportunities to test their new found self-assurance on the international stage since South Africa 2010. An inability to find the net has been a recurring theme in the few matches they have played, despite coach Ricki Herbert often starting with three forwards. While age is likely to prevent some of the key personnel from South Africa 2010 featuring at Brazil 2014, a host of new faces is likely to see the All Whites enjoying greater depth than has previously been the case.
